| The locomotives of this class
are a rare type. They were the only two cylinder compound locomotives that worked in Hellas. There were three separate orders by the Peloponnese Railways for three locomotives each, in 1902, 1904 and 1906 respectively. The other four locomotives were from the Attica Railway, which were exactly the same as the aforementioned ones. They came into Pelopon- nese Railway ownership with the takeover of the Attica Railway in 1929. During their first years they did both mainline and branchline service. With the introduction into service of more powerful loco- motives they were transferred on branch line and small freight trains. All twelve locomotives survived WWII and were rebuilt in 1945 or 1946 into simple expansion superheater locomotives. Thus they were reclassified and became members of the class Zs 531-555. This rebuilding was done due to the fact that saturated steam was considered obsolete and they tended to be unstable because of the two cylinders of uneven size. |
