| Without a doubt this is one of
the most interesting locomotive classes, ever in Hellas. They were built by Krauss in Munich. The first interesting characteristic is that they were the only mallets that worked in a first class network in Hellas. As the mallet type dictates, the locomotives were four cylinder compounds (only one other class in the history of the Hellenic Railways was a four cylinder compound and worked on the standard gauge network), with one set of high pressure (H.P.) and one set of low pressure (L.P.) cyli- nders. Some sources refer to them as saturated steam locomotives. This is not actually true as the manufacturers photographs reveal us that they used superheated steam (Patent Wilhelm Schmidt). Another feature that is worth noting is the relatively small tender in contrast to the locomotive. About their service, we know little. The only thing that we know from witnesses is that they used to do pas- senger services on the steep Tripolis line. Today none of the three locomotives exists, because they were destroyed during the retreat of the German troops in 1944. |
