TRAINSCAPES OF MESSINIA

The Messinias Prefecture is a place of many many beauties. It has the particularity of combining tropical beaches, endless fields of olive trees and of course some really rough but beautiful mountains. Many of these beauties can be seen from the trains, something which is not well known even by local people. So come with us abort this ride and lets discover all of these together through the eyes of a railfan-photographer and we hope that this will urge you to use the railway as you next mean of travel in the nature. All Aboard???!!!!!!

At almost every corner of this picture we can see olive tree fields...common sight in Messinia. The Railbus is running the schedule Kalamata - Kyparissia - Kalamata and it has been caught on film near Kopanaki. (Photograph: Ilias Ntaivis, September 2004)

This is an older image of the north part of Messinia where the train starts to climb into the mountains of Arcadia. Here we can see the surrounding mountains and the really endless fields of olive trees. The village in the background is Diavolitsi and the one on the right is Desylla. Although it is the end of March the sky is really cloudy and it seems that it will rain...This Railbus is just returning to Kalamata from its journey to Diavolitsi (40km from Kalamata)...during this journey it passes through countless fields and here is one of them near the village of Ammos. And here we have the beautiful small station of Thouria, just a few kilometres outside Kalamata. (Photograph: Andreas Kapaklis, June 2005)
